Does a gemstone unused expires on its own?

Dear Olga, I have a question, it would be great if I could get a guiding answer.

Does a gemstone unused expires on its own? For example, I have a perfect Ruby jotish quality purchased 2012, but never used it, kept it in nicely packed box. Now I want to use it. Will it be effective 2018?

As I have understood from various online material, once you start using it – it will have some life, it says typically sapphire type gemstones life is about 5 years.

Don't worry. There's not expiration date on unused gemstones. You can use them forever.
