GermGuardian AC4100 - Editor's Pick

GermGuardian AC4100
GermGuardian AC4100
Air Purifier

The GermGuardian AC4100 is a table top Air Purifier that incorporates 3 types of technologies: UV-C, HEPA, and charcoal filter.

The pre-filter is filled with charcoal for odor reduction and elimination of larger particles.

The HEPA filter is not true HEPA, but rather near HEPA. It means that this machine captures 99 percent of air particles of 0.7 microns or larger. True HEPA would require 99.97 percent of particles removed down to 0.3 microns. It doesn't seem to be important, but in practice it is important, especially if you have high sensitivity.

The third stage of purification by GermGuardian AC4100 is a fluorescent UV-C lamp in combination with TiO2 screen to kill viruses, bacteria, germs and spores.

Given the price, which is somewhere around $60, it is a good choice. You will find no automation or sensors, but this is understandable for this price range.

The CARD ratings for this unit are somewhere close to 60, which is not that bad, given the portable nature of this air purifier.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, this unit might be able to help you with your problems.

PROS

  • easy to move around
  • budget friendly
  • as many as 3 stages of filtration
  • can be placed on the side

CONS

  • Not true HEPA
  • Don't expect miracles if you have chemical sensitivities
  • Loud on high settings
  • Constant expenses (HEPA replacement, UV lamp replacement)

GermGuardian GG1000

GermGuardian GG1000
GermGuardian GG1000
Air Purifier

Germ Guardian GG1000 has only one air purification technology: UV air sanitization. This is not what air purification usually means. There are no filters to capture airborne particles.

However, if you are concerned with killing airborne germs, GG-1000 is able to remove as much as 98 percent of microorganism the pass through the unit. All this provided that the space this unit is installed in is small.

The other upside is odor removal. If you are concerned about odor removal in confined rooms, Germ Guardian GG 1000 can help.

The UV bulb should be replaced after 4,000 hours. It will start change its color or flicker when the time for replacement is near.

Note that the bulb is hazardous, because it is coated with harmful mercury contaminant.

If you are looking to prevent some typical illnesses that are transferred by sneezing or touching, this air sanitizer won't help much. It may be good for odor elimination, especially if placed in kitchens or baths. Because of its relatively high noise levels, avoid using this air cleaner in bedrooms or living rooms.

PROS

  • UV technology doesn't produce harmful Ozone
  • Simple to maintain
  • Small to carry along
  • Great for small kitchens

CONS

  • Too loud
  • UV bulb replacement costs

GermGuardian GG1100W Elite

GermGuardian GG1100W
GermGuardian GG1100W
Air Purifier

GermGuardian GG110W Elite is a similar unit to the previous one. It is somewhat smaller and of different design, but the principle of operation is very similar.

In fact, Germ Guardian GG1100 is the updated version of GG1000. Both cleaners are able to cover basically the same space, but this one does have a USB port.

It is also centered around UV sanitization (kills bacteria, mold spores, and viruses) and elimination of odors. You can plug it to the nearest wall socket in your kitchen to remove cooking odors, smoke, or mildew.

Just plug it in to a wall socket to destroy bacteria and fight odors from cooking, mildew.

PROS

  • Compact design
  • Easy operation
  • Great price
  • Small to carry along
  • Great for small spaces
  • USB port

CONS

  • UV bulb replacement costs
  • Too Noisy

Hunter 20310B Cube Tabletop

 Hunter 20310B Cube
Hunter 20310B
Air Purifier

The Hunter 20310B air purifier comes with HEPA 2 in 1 filter technology. This means that you will get a HEPA filter in combination with an Eco silver pre-filter.

This is a True HEPA, meaning that this unit will catch as much as 99.97 percent of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. The Clean air Delivery rate (CADR) is around 45 - not that bad for a tabletop air purifier.

The eco silver prefilter is not a charcoal based filter, but it serves as a filter for smoke, kitchen and pet odors, and VOCs. It is also an antimicrobial guard that inhibits the growth of viruses and bacteria.

PROS

  • True HEPA
  • Easy to move around
  • 2 Seed fan
  • Quiet operation

CONS

  • Efficient for confined rooms only
  • Ongoing expenses (HEPA replacement, Pre filter replacement)

Homdox Car Air Purifier

 Homdox Car Air Purifier
Homdox Car
Air Purifier

The Homdox Air Purifier is a great choice if you want a compact system with stylish design. Especially designed for cars and other vehicles, it is capable of dealing with allergens, bad odors, and dust particles.

The air is pulled from underneath the purifier and goes through several layers of filtration. Clean air is pushed through small openings at the top of the unit.

This is also a true HEPA machine, but Homdox has a special type of HEPA filter called HEVA.

HEVA means a combination of HEPA technology and technology for dealing with VOCs. VOC stands for dangerous volatile organic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, for example.

The HEVA filter should be replaced after 6 to 9 months of operation.

PROS

  • Stylish design
  • Easy operation
  • Reasonable price
  • True HEPA
  • Quality sensor
  • CADR rating of 40

CONS

  • Ongoing expenses (filter replacement)
  • Efficient in confined spaces only

Winext Auto Ionizer with Air Filter

 Winext Auto Ionizer
Winext Auto
Air Purifier

Unlike the above, the Winext air purifier is a negative ion generator. It contains no HEPA filter, no charcoal filter, and no UV stage of filtration.

It rather uses electrostatic technology to catch dust, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, and viruses.

It is primarily designed to be used in cars. You can plug it into a cigarette lighter, but it also has a USB port. It means you are given more options to use this air cleaner around the house, office, or hotel.

Winext Auto Ionizer is very portable. It is a free standing unit, 5 inches wide, and relatively slim.

As any electrostatic negative ion generator, Winext produces some small concentrations of ozone. While they have no substantial influence to the body, people with respiratory problems and high sensitivity, would have to avoid even low ozone levels.

PROS

  • Compact and highly portable
  • USB port
  • Very quiet

CONS

  • No HEPA filtration
  • Not suitable for pollen and other allergies
  • Work better in cars than in residential areas
  • Some ozone emission

Eco Breeze
Eco Breeze Car
Air Purifier

Pros:

  • Compact design
  • Simple to use
  • Inexpensive
  • Silent operation

Cons:

  • Not nearly as efficient as the HEPA models
  • Small ozone levels

Biota Bot MM108 has a 2 fan settings and a timer for automatic setting of the desired time of operation. The 2 filters installed in the unit should be replaced regularly, usually after 6 to 12 months.

  • Timer

CONS

  • Ongoing expenses (filter replacement)
  • Higher price than the competition

Holmes HAP242 Air Purifier

Holmes HAP242
Holmes HAP242
Air Purifier

HAP242 is a HEPA based air purifier. However it is not True HEPA. So we have 99 percent of airborne particles captured, rather than 99.97 percent. Even though it doesn't seem like much of a difference, it is a huge difference.

The CADR specifications of this units are 55 for dust, 70 for smoke, and 65 for pollen. Not bad, but notice that these numbers are for the highest fan speed, which potentially means a lot of noise.

Is this an air purifier for you? Yes, if you are looking for a cheap HEPA system. No, if you are extra sensitive to the quality of the air and want to solve your health problems.

PROS

  • Ultra cheap for a HEPA unit
  • Good for small areas

CONS

Travel Size Air Purifier Buyer’s Guide

Here we have several different classes of air purifiers:

  • HEPA or True HEPA units (with or without activated carbon filter)
  • UV-C units
  • Negative ion generators,
  • or a combination of several technologies

Which one you will choose from the list above, depends on your needs and expectations.

You would have to answer the following questions:

Do you need an ultra portable unit?

- In that case choose a negative ion generator. They are light weight. But if you need more serious air purification you have to choose a HEPA based system. The HEPA models in the list above are purifiers that you can move around easily.

Do you need a car unit only?

- We have listed a several dedicated car air purifiers, but again, they are not HEPA cleaners.

Do you have to deal with allergies and breathing difficulties?

- If the answer is yes, you have to choose a HEPA purifier, preferably a True HEPA unit.

In conclusion, the GermGuardian AC4100 is our Editor's Pick. It is cheap, it has a combination of cleaning technologies, including True HEPA and is very popular. Yet, again, it is one of the least portable air purifier from our list.

If you need to have something more lightweight and still efficient, choose the Homdox Car Air Purifier.
